Five Doncaster Rovers players have been selected to represent their nations during the international break. Manager Grant McCann is planning to attend matches to watch Sean Grehan, Leon Ayinde, Darren Robinson, Tommy Simkin and his son Bayley McCann in action for their respective youth teams.
Grehan, who has 15 caps for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s, captained the side and scored in a 2-2 draw with Croatia in June. He has featured regularly for Rovers since April, including filling in at right-back. Ayinde, with two Under-21 caps, recorded his first Football League assist earlier this season. He last featured internationally in a 1-1 draw against Moldova in March.
Darren Robinson has 17 appearances for Northern Ireland's Under-21 side and has made three appearances across all competitions for Doncaster this term. He will be joined in the Northern Irish squad by Bayley McCann, who has four caps and has provided two assists in League One this season. McCann is getting his first real taste of football at this level and has mainly featured on the wing.
Tommy Simkin, who has 10 caps across England's Under-18 and Under-20 sides, has featured in eight matches for Rovers since joining, keeping two clean sheets. He was part of the England Under-21 squad that won the European Championship in Slovakia last year. "That’s some England Under-21 squad," said McCann.
Manager's Plans
Grant McCann said it will be interesting to know when the club last had five players representing their countries. He is planning to travel to see his son Bayley and Darren Robinson in Northern Ireland's upcoming Under-21 games. McCann also intends to get staff to other matches to watch Grehan and Ayinde for the Republic of Ireland, and to see Simkin with the Three Lions.
The international call-ups come as Doncaster Rovers sit 21st in League One with six points from seven games. Their recent form shows one win, one draw and three losses from their last five matches, a run they will aim to improve upon after the break.
