AFC Wimbledon manager Johnnie Jackson has labelled Doncaster Rovers boss Grant McCann a top manager and praised his adaptability. Jackson's comments came in the wake of his side's 1-0 victory over Rovers in London last week, a result that left McCann's team 24th in League One with just three points from six games.
Speaking to the Doncaster Free Press, Jackson reflected on the recent meetings between the two clubs and his respect for his opposite number. "I think I know what his teams are all about, how he wants his teams to play," Jackson said. He pointed to the close nature of their recent fixtures, which have seen each side win on the other's ground.
Jackson on McCann's approach
Jackson highlighted McCann's ability to change games with tactical adjustments. "Grant's a top manager. He's a top coach and one thing he will be is adaptable," he noted, specifically referencing halftime changes made in a recent 2-2 draw with Stevenage. This season has proven challenging for Rovers, who have scored six goals but conceded nine, leaving them with a minus-three goal difference and ten points adrift of early leaders Sheffield Wednesday.
Their recent fixtures have been difficult, with the last five outings yielding two draws and three defeats. The sequence includes losses to Huddersfield, Plymouth, and Middlesbrough, alongside draws against Notts County and Stevenage. The defeat at Wimbledon, settled by a Myles Hippolyte goal in the 43rd minute, extended a winless run.
Focus turns to Peterborough
Attention now turns to halting that slide with a trip to face Peterborough United this Saturday. Peterborough currently sit 21st in the standings, just two places and two points above Rovers, making it a significant early-season encounter. McCann will be looking for a response from his squad as they seek a first league win of the campaign.
The manager has a full week to prepare his players for the challenge at London Road. A positive result could provide a vital platform to build from ahead of a busy period in the schedule. Doncaster's next home game is against Barnsley on September 26th.
