Doncaster Rovers manager Grant McCann is well-versed in the League One division, having secured the title with Hull City in 2020-21 and guided Rovers to the play-offs in 2018-19. McCann thinks the league has become crazy in terms of finances, with some clubs splashing out to attract top players. He stated: 'It's gone crazy; whether it's inflation or how things have moved, the league is mad.' McCann pointed out that some goalkeepers in the division earn more than two or three of his players combined. Despite this, Rovers have adopted a more cautious approach to spending, with the third lowest total in the division at £158,005. The club remained calm and consolidated, avoiding a spending spree to ensure safety. McCann believes the league will level itself out at some point, but for now, Rovers will focus on developing their squad within their means. The EFL has introduced rule changes to reduce losses and reliance on owner funding, which may impact the spending sprees in League One. Clubs relegated from the second-tier will be permitted to spend 65% of turnover on wages, while remaining clubs will see their wage spending reduced from 60% to 50% of turnover. McCann believes it's not all about finances, citing Luton's big budget and failure to dominate the league. He emphasized the importance of what happens in the changing room, rather than just relying on financial muscle. The manager is confident that Rovers will get to a point where they can compete with the bigger-spending clubs, but it may take a sale or significant investment to sustain themselves over a longer period.
