Doncaster Rovers have confirmed the permanent signing of goalkeeper Josh Clarke from Scottish Championship side Partick Thistle for an undisclosed fee. The deal sees the Northern Irish Under-21 international commit his future to the League One club after initially arriving on loan.

Manager Grant McCann and his recruitment team moved to finalise the transfer ahead of schedule. Clarke had joined Rovers on a loan arrangement with a view to a permanent move in January, but his performances convinced the club to act sooner. The 22-year-old shot-stopper made his competitive debut for Rovers in their 3-1 League Cup defeat to Championship side Middlesbrough earlier this season.

Josh Clarke is a London-born goalkeeper with an interesting background. His father is Irish and his mother is Swedish. He developed in the academy systems of Premier League giants Chelsea and Bournemouth before seeking senior football. Clarke's first taste of first-team action came with Northern Irish side Glenavon. He then played 39 times for Celtic's B team before moving into the Scottish second tier with spells at Ayr United and Airdrieonians.

His most consistent run of games came last season on loan at Partick Thistle. Clarke played 42 times for the Firhill side, conceding 39 goals and keeping 14 clean sheets as Thistle finished second in the Scottish Championship. That experience was a key factor in Rovers' decision to bring him in.

Clarke arrives to provide competition and cover in the goalkeeping department. Tommy Simkin is currently the established first-choice keeper at the Eco-Power Stadium, with experienced coach Kyle Letheren overseeing the group. Clarke's arrival adds depth and a long-term option for McCann. The manager was clear in his assessment of the new signing.

Grant McCann said: "Josh is an excellent young goalkeeper who has all the attributes to have a fantastic career in the game." Clarke himself reflected on his early involvement, stating his debut at the Riverside Stadium gave him a real taste of the demands at this level and has driven him to push on.

The signing comes as Rovers look to build momentum in League One. Their start to the 2026-27 campaign has been challenging, with the team currently 22nd in the table. They have three points from five games, with a record of zero wins, three draws and two losses. Their recent form reads LDDDL. Offensively, the team has scored six goals but conceded eight, resulting in a minus-two goal difference. They are already nine points behind early leaders Sheffield Wednesday.

Focus now turns to the next fixture, an away trip to face AFC Wimbledon on September 12th. Wimbledon are currently 19th, making it a significant early-season encounter for both sides. Josh Clarke will be hoping to challenge for a starting role as Doncaster Rovers aim to climb the table.
