Doncaster Rovers was founded in 1879 by a group of local football enthusiasts. Initially, the club played its matches on various pitches around Doncaster. The team adopted the name 'Rovers' to reflect the nomadic nature of their early years.

The club's golden era came in the early 1960s when they achieved significant success in the Football League. They won the Second Division title in 1969, which marked their rise to the top tier of English football.

Billy Sharp is one of the most iconic players in the club's history, known for his goal-scoring prowess. James Coppinger has also made a significant impact, being a long-serving player and fan favorite. Don Megson is remembered for his contributions during the club's formative years.
